Pondering – Change

Things change – constantly.

I often tell people that whenever you have a problem, it is wise to ask yourself, “What changed?”  If it was okay before and is a problem now, you can be sure that something has changed.

I also suggest that the real definition of a problem is the difference between your “desired state” and your “current state.”  For example: Something changes and you get a virus….Your desired state is 98.6 degrees…..Your current state is 102 degrees.  That difference is the problem.

Of course, not all changes present a problem.  When your antibodies take over and begin to defeat the infection, your temperature starts coming back to normal and this change is very welcome.

When we take a look at history, we can ask ourselves, “Have the changes over time been positive or negative?”

If you believe in the Garden of Eden, then man has truly fallen a grave distance from his “desired state.”

If you, on the other hand, subscribe to the belief that the Earth is approximately 4.5 billion years old, with life evolving from its simplest form, then you would have to say that the changes over time have been positive.

A favorite quote comes from D’Arcy Thompson who said, “Everything is what it is because it got that way.”

Now the most important question of all – If my golf swing got this way, what were all the changes that made it so?  It’s definitely a long way from its desired state!

Oh, well.  No worries.  It most certainly will change by the time I next stand on the first tee box.

Such is life.
