Congressman Anthony Weiner

It starts out with a tweeted picture of a guy in his underwear.  Supposedly sent from Congressman Weiner’s Twitter account.

When it goes public, Weiner doesn’t deny that it is him, but doesn’t confirm either.  He tells the media that his Twitter account has been hacked.

Some suggest that if a U.S. Congressman’s Twitter account has been hacked that the FBI should get involved.  But Weiner doesn’t want this.  Lying to the media is not a criminal offense.  Lying to the FBI is another matter.

For 10 days, Weiner tries to deflect the questions…saying, as they usually do, that he has more important things to do.  That this distraction is preventing him from doing the real work that the people elected him to do.

Then, like the Tiger Woods episode, girls start coming out of the woodwork and we start seeing more pictures and even copies of chat texts.

His Democrat buddies are all heading for the hills.  (Except for Charles Rangle.)  Pelosi and Obama suggest that he resign.  Weiner takes a leave of absence and says he is getting help for his problem.

What exactly is the problem?

Actually, having a guy who is obsessed with himself….more specifically, obsessed with his own junk….isn’t the most offensive problem, in my opinion.  If his wife is OK with his behavior, why should anybody else care?  As long as he isn’t breaking any laws, his weirdness is just that. 

What bothers me is when these guys (politicians, televangelists, etc.) lie to the public and assume that we are all stupid and/or naïve. 

Maybe he’s in a treatment center for prevarication.  Probably not though.  Nobody seems to be disturbed about that character flaw.

Isn’t it important that our governmental leaders be truthful?
