According to the Bible, one of the signs that our “age” is coming to an end is described in both Matt. 24:29 and Mark 13:25. Jesus says that the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light and the stars will fall from the sky.
Another passage, Revelation 6:13, says something similar. According to it, the sun will turn black, the moon will turn red and the stars in the sky will fall to the Earth.
The people who lived when the scripture was written, obviously, had a geocentric view of the universe. To them, everything revolved around the Earth, which was flat and had water underneath it. The sky was a “firmament” and they even believed that there was water above this firmament.
The sun revolved around the Earth and the stars were just small, shining objects, which could easily fall to our world.
Today we recognize that this is not how things in our solar system physically operate. The sun is a star. Its brightness will continue to increase. Then it will enter its “Red Giant” phase and swell to hundreds of times its present size. At that time, the Earth will become toast.
It will not, however, turn dark while any humans are still alive.
And the other stars, many of which are much larger than our sun and therefore, not only bigger than Earth, but possessing greater gravitational forces as well, will not be “falling” to our planet.
I don’t think these celestial prophecies are the ones that will signal the end of our age.
