Yo, Ho, Ho, Ho; A Pirate's Life For Me

Or not.

Hooray for the South Korean military!  Today South Korean navy commandos took back one of their ships hijacked by…guess who?  That’s right….Somali pirates.

The commandos rescued all 21 crew members and in the process killed 8 of the Somali bad guys.  The remaining 5 pirates were captured.

Meanwhile, news reports tell me that Somali pirates currently hold 29 vessels and about 700 hostages!

What?!?

How can we let a bunch of third-world-country renegades, driving small boats, take our much-larger vessels?

May I make a suggestion?  (I know this sounds awfully simplistic.)  Instead of being willing to pay $9 million in ransom money just to get your property back, why don’t these big companies spend a portion of that to arm their ships to the teeth and/or hire security teams to accompany any ship sailing off the East African coast?

Then when the bad guys try to board your ship, your response will be swift and final.  (i.e. blow their boat right out of the water!)

The Somalis who are contemplating piracy need to know that instead of a hopeful million-dollar reward for their actions, there is very likely possibility of death.
